레오나르도 크레모니니 Leonardo Cremonini
"Timeless Monumentality"

- 이탈리아의 화가, 1925-2010
- Leonardo Cremonini was the son of a railway worker who taught him the basics of painting. In 1935, his father had to relocate to Calabria for professional reasons. The Tyrrhenian coast where Cremonini would grow up would have a profound impact on his later work.   보아하니 아버지로부터 지대한 영향을 받았던 거 같음. 사이가 좋았나봐. 이탈리아의 티레니아 해변은 크레모니니 후기작에 영감을 주었던 공간. 
- Supported by a grant from the Collegio Venturoli he studied from 1932 to 1936 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, and then at the Brera Academy in Milan .   기반을 고향인 이탈리아에서 닦은 거 같음. 
- In Bologna he met Giorgio Morandi. Through him he received another scholarship, which in 1951 enabled him to stay in Paris.   순수미술을 공부했던 볼로냐에서 조르지오 모란디를 만나게 되었고, 그로부터 장학금을 받게 됨. 그리고 그 장학금 덕분에 1951년에 파리에 유학갈 수 있게 되었다고 한다. 
- His art was well received and gained critical appreciation by a number of known French and Italian writers and literary figures such as Louis Althusser, Michel Butor, Italo Calvino, Regis Debray and Marc Le Bot.   크레모니니의 그림은 프랑스에서 크게 호평 받았으며, 그는 그곳에서 알튀세르, 부토, 칼비노, 드브레이, 르 보트와 사귀게 된다. 
- 1974년에는 동료 화가인 Roberta Crocioni와 결혼해서 Pietro라는 아들 하나를 슬하에 둔다. 
- 1983년부터 1992년까지는 파리 Ecole des beaux-arts 스튜디오의 수장이 된다. 당시 문화부 장관이었던 Jack Lang의 눈에는 크레모니니가 현대미술에 개방적인 인물이라고 판단되었기 때문이다. 그러나 역설적이게도 크레모니니는 당대 미술계 트렌드로부터 자신을 격리시켰다. 
 - 크레모니니가..약간 그거였나본데... 동종업계에서 약간 자발적 왕따? 은따? 같은 거였나봐ㅋㅋ Cremonini seemed to be marginalized. 였다는 걸 보니까. 
- 근데 재밌는 건 그를 추앙하는 화가 중에 내가 좋아하는 Francis Bacon이 있다는 것. 어쩐지... 둘이 그림 분위기 너무 비슷해. 
- 또 한 명은 W.H.Auden... 음... 오든 시가 좀 퇴폐적(?) 우울하긴 했지... 
- MOMA 전 국장 William Ruben도 크레모니니 호평하긴 했었던 듯. his work embodies a spirit of timeless monumentality. 라면서.


종합적으로 말하자면, 크레모니니의 그림은 
1. poetic and enigmatic imagery
2. arid, light-filled, silent interiors, described in meticulous detail 
3. populated by anemic, emotionally detached figures. 
4. geometric clarity and purity form
5. his compositions recall the still lifes of the modern Italian painter Giorgio Morandi
6. rigorously constructed spaces that adhere to the geometric laws of perspective hark back much further in history, to Piero della Francesca and other artists of the Italian Renaissance.
